WHAT DOES SUV STAND FOR

SUV, an acronym that stands for “sport utility vehicles”, may have become common language in the 1980s, but the capability behind its name started much earlier. “Sport utility vehicle” appeared for the first time in 1974 in the brochure of the first-generation Cherokee, cementing its place in history. From that moment on, the term SUV and Jeep® became synonymous. Characterised by their wide range of capabilities, thanks to its raised and widened base, four-wheel drive technology and rugged interiors, Jeep®’s first SUVs achieved legendary status by overcoming the toughest obstacles. The combination of freedom and strength showed the world what an SUV should be, creating an emotional bond between the brand and its fans that continues to this day.

THE SUV HISTORY

The history of the Jeep® brand is well documented, dating back to WWII (1942), where it had the name Willys Overland. The SUV’s original design exhibited the same functionality and incredible durability that has always been a Jeep® trademark, so much so that the United States army called it their general purpose (GP) vehicle. At every turn, Jeep® wrote and rewrote its own history. From its unique name, to coining the term SUV, Jeep® has always been more than a trendsetter, it’s been a trailblazer. With revolutionary SUVs like the Jeep® CJ, the first “civilian Jeep®” produced for the public in 1945, to the “full-size Jeeps”, like the SJ Wagoneer, Cherokee and the pick-ups starting in the 1960’s, to the particular dispatcher Jeep® that was used by the US Postal service, Jeep® hasn’t just been ahead of the curve with its SUVs, it has been steadily creating it. In the mid-’80s, Wrangler and a redesigned Cherokee were introduced. They were catalysts in developing a cult-like following from automotive and outdoor enthusiasts.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUV & 4x4

Many times, the words SUV, Compact SUV and 4x4 are all grouped into one, but depending on what you need, it’s good to know what sets each one apart. The difference between a Compact SUV and SUV has everything to do with its frame and construction, and much less to do with its capability. An SUV is built upon a broader and longer frame that offers higher ground clearance and increases overall size. On the other hand, a Compact SUV is typically built on a smaller car-based frame with a more vertical design for a more spacious interior as well as having a unibody construction. 4x4 is merely a term that is used to describe a vehicle with a system that mechanically engages all four wheels at the same time. An SUV, Compact SUV and 4x4 all offer superior off-road capability compared to standard automobiles, and an elevated driving position that increases vision, safety and guarantees a more comfortable, spacious ride.
